Governor Brewer Establishes
“Governor’s P-20 Coordinating Council of Arizona” |
| |
PHOENIX – Arizona Governor Jan Brewer issued an executive order establishing the “Governor’s P-20 Coordinating Council of Arizona.” Citing the need to maximize the effectiveness of
our educational systems at all levels, Governor Brewer has charged the Council with devising and
articulating ways to achieve a more streamlined system of education while improving academic
achievement.
“We are all too familiar with the statistics regarding educational achievement in Arizona, but the days of excuses must come to an end,” stated Governor Brewer. “Our entire educational continuum must have a forum where they can coordinate policies and discuss the future.”
The Council will provide a statewide forum that will, in turn, provide recommendations to the Governor on specific education reforms outlined in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). In Arizona’s State Fiscal Stabilization Fund application, the Governor offered assurances to make progress on four key education reforms: improving the distribution of qualified teachers; establishing a longitudinal data system; enhancing academic standards and assessments and supporting the state’s struggling schools. The Governor’s P-20 Coordinating Council will serve as the vehicle for these reforms.
Furthermore, in April of this year, Governor Brewer called upon Arizona’s Board of Regents to produce new reform models that would increase affordability, accountability and predictability. In June, the Governor issued an Executive Order re-instituting the Arizona Community College Council
to further higher education reform.
“The need to maximize efficiency in our educational system has never been greater as we approach the 2011 funding cliff,” stated Governor Brewer. “However, given our employment and economic crisis, never have the needs for an educated workforce been greater.” |

| Message from the Chair |

I would like to express my appreciation and commend Governor Brewer for establishing the P-20 Coordinating Council. The Council provides a public forum for addressing public education improvement and reform throughout the entire continuum, from pre-school through life-long learning.
Council members all represent a certain constituency and each have the responsibility to take the discussions, recommendations, and general work of the Council back to their respective boards, commissions, or constituency and to engage them in discussion, and in action. Members also have a responsibility to ensure that the work of the Council is informed by the work of these groups.
This Council does not have the time or ability to tackle every single issue—and not every individual idea presented will make its way into various initiatives or policy. Our work, however, must have a statewide impact affecting every student in Arizona.
I greatly appreciate the expertise, knowledge and passion that each and every member of this Council has toward improving the education continuum in Arizona. Together we can and will achieve an education system that ensures a ready workforce leading to a prosperous future for all Arizonans.
